Shortbus (aka Ride the Bus, “Memphis Style”)
Setup
-52 card deck (no jokers)
-lots of beer
-best played with 4-8 people
Rules to drink by
Choose someone to be the dealer (doesn’t matter who, there are no benefits. Dealer plays game also.) Players sit in a circle, cards are shuffled…LET THE GAME BEGIN!
I. THE ROUNDS
Each person is dealt a card face up in a series of four rounds, before which the player must call out the card being dealt:
1. Color (red/black)
2. Higher, lower, or same (than face value, Ace is high)
3. Outside, in between, or same (than face values of two cards previously dealt)
4. Suit (choose a suit, regardless of previously dealt cards)
If the player guess correctly, s/he takes no drinks (unless they feel like takin’ a swig). If guessed incorrectly, player drinks (no specific amount, but this is a drinking game, so take a nice chug). After the four rounds are completed, each player holds on to their cards for Phase II.
II. THE MATCH
Deal out 8 cards in two horizontal rows of four face down. The top row are the “Give” cards, the bottom row the “Take” cards. Each column of cards is worth a # of drinks, beginning on the left: 2,4,6, then 8. Starting on the top left, going to bottom left, then top of next column, to bottom, to top of 3rd column, etc. like a zig zag, flip over each card.
“Give”- If a player has a matching card from the Give row, s/he gives away the card from their hand to someone, as well as the # of drinks (# depends on which column, drinks can be split up among people if desired.)
“Take”- If a player has a matching card from the Take row, s/he must keep that card and drink the # of drinks.
After all 8 cards are flipped, person (or people) with the most cards gets to ride shotgun on the SHORTBUS! All cards are reshuffled for Phase III.
III. THE SHORTBUS
The dealer deals out the cards using the same method as in Phase I (The Rounds: player calls out color, higher/lower/same, etc. before each card is dealt face up). If player guesses correctly, s/he moves on to the next round (color-> higher/lower/same, etc.) If player guesses incorrectly, s/he must drink 2X the amount they had in Phase I (if taking little sips, take a big one. If taking a couple gulps, down four). Also, they must start over in Rounds (if on higher/lower/same, restart at colors.) To get off the Shortbus, player must make it through the Rounds.
Game is over when the person gets off the Shortbus.
It all depends on how much you want to drink. Take big swigs and by the end you will feel like Barry Badrinath playing “Asshole”.
Good luck, and Godspeed. Don’t forget to tip your dealer!
